Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View

Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View by various authors
This book isn't actually a novel, but something much more special: To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie, dozens of authors came together to write 40 short stories, each one retelling part of the movie from a new perspective. Most of the stories are told from the viewpoint of a minor background character or other onlooker to the events of the movie.

As if that wasn't cool enough, the authors all contributed for free, with the publisher donating the proceeds to charity.

This is the first New Canon take on background characters from Episode IV: A New Hope, but if you can't get enough, also check out Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina in the Legends alternate timeline! And if you enjoyed this book, check out the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back: From a Certain Point of View.

A tie-in to the video game Battlefront II, this book tells a story of elite Imperial soldiers on a mission to track down the remnants of Saw Gerrera's rebel extremists after the events of Rogue One and the destruction of the Death Star.

This is the second book based on the Battlefront video games. The first was Battlefront: Twilight Company by Alexander Freed, though that book actually takes place after Inferno Squad in the timeline.

Doctor Aphra (Audiobook and Script)

Doctor Aphra by Sarah Kuhn
Based on the popular Doctor Aphra character from the canon Darth Vader comic books, Doctor Aphra is the second Star Wars story to debut as an audiobook exclusive, with a full cast of voice performers just like Dooku: Jedi Lost.

The audiobook both adapts and expands upon the story from the comics, telling the story of how a quirky rogue archaeologist ends up working for Darth Vader himself.

If you don't like to listen to audiobooks or aren't able to, you can also buy the script of the story as a printed book.

The Princess and the Scoundrel

The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis
Set just after the end of Return of the Jedi, this new novel covers Han and Leia's wedding for the first time in the new canon. There's more to the story than that, of course, as the newly-married couple end up on a whole new adventure despite their attempts at a relaxing honeymoon.

The book is also something of a tie-in to Disney World's Galactic Starcruiser immersive Star Wars experience hotel, with both taking place on the Halcyon luxury vessel.

Alphabet Squadron

Alphabet Squadron by Alexander Freed
Many longtime Star Wars readers fondly remember the Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron X-Wing novels by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston, a staple of the old Legends timeline. Now, the new Star Wars canon has a ragtag fighter squadron of its own.

Named "Alphabet Squadron" for their combination of A-Wing, B-Wing, X-Wing, and Y-Wing starfighters, and serving under a major character from the Star Wars: Rebels TV show, the group of pilots must hunt down and battle an elite TIE-fighter squadron in the months after Return of the Jedi.

For the other side of the story, check out the TIE Fighter graphic novel from Marvel Comics.

The Aftermath Trilogy

The Aftermath Trilogy by Chuck Wendig
The first new canon stories set after Return of the Jedi! In the months after the destruction of the second Death Star, the Empire is not yet dead. But when a group of high-level Imperials convene for a secret meeting on the planet Akiva, they soon find themselves on the defensive against an impromptu collection of rag-tag rebels, who will later go on to even greater adventures! Meanwhile, Imperial Admiral Rae Sloane, an outsider to the circles of galactic power, finds herself tasked with holding together the faltering Empire.

These books have gotten a kind of "love it or hate it" reaction from readers. Written in an unconventional style. Everything is happening in third-person present tense. Many short, incomplete sentences. But we found them really entertaining, with good character development.

Force Collector

Force Collector by Kevin Shinick
A lighthearted story about a high school kid running away from home to learn more about the Jedi, this is, well, not the most adult of Disney-Lucasfilm's line of young adult Star Wars novels. But that doesn't mean it's not a fun read, and it also has some small connections to places and things from The Rise of Skywalker movie and Disney's Galaxy's Edge theme park.

Canto Bight

Canto Bight by Saladin Ahmed, Rae Carson, Mira Grant, and John Jackson Miller
Canto Bight is the galaxy's most luxurious Casino City, and one of the settings of the The Last Jedi movie. In this book, four star authors each contribute a short novella about the lives of the people living in and visiting this city, and the gambles they must take to survive in a world where beauty is only a facade.

The stories are based on settings and background characters from The Last Jedi. Some of them ended up getting cut from the actual film, but it's a really fun read anyway.
